**Scene Eight: Strolling Together** Morning clouds drift across the Lujiang sky, We tread the fragrant embankment where willows gleam. Laughing, I point at two white egrets on the waves, Leisurely, we lean on the rocks beside half a pond of lotuses. The wind tousles our hair, fragrance fills the path, Rain falls on our shoulders, hearts brim with content. Most enchanting is the sunset painting dusk's glow— I wish to walk with you toward the distant river. After they pledged their love, whenever free, they would stroll together on Deer Island. One fair day, they walked along the island's ring road. Seeing white egrets skimming the waves and lotus shadows swaying, Su Yu was inspired and composed this poem. Wanqing laughed softly in response, "Your poems always hold so much feeling—I'm almost tipsy from them." Su Yu put an arm around her shoulder. "The scenery is beautiful, but you are even lovelier. How could one not be drunk?" Wanqing lightly punched him, but hid her smile in her eyes. **Scene Nine: The Heart** Evening light urges return, yet lingering joy remains, They suddenly meet an old friend who shares plans and schemes. The friend asks with a grin, "Where have you bestowed your heart?" Su Yu points afar—at the moon like a hook. Wanqing feigns anger and quickens her steps, Su Yu hurries after, soothing her with tender words. He gathers the clear moonlight as if it were paper, And writes new verses to gift his gentle one. At a street corner, they encountered Su Yu's former classmate, who teased them. Wanqing pretended to be angry and strode ahead on her own. Su Yu panicked, caught up quickly, pulled out the paper and brush he always carried, and wrote a "Riverside Daffodils" by the light of a streetlamp. *Laughter suddenly startles light wings, He chases after, offers poetry in haste. Clear moonlight is paper, the moon an eye— I wish to use my heart as ink, To write all the tenderness of a lifetime. Do not be vexed by whispered words before the breeze; Just watch the returning boat beyond the clouds. The threads of love have long bound both hearts— Let the Lujiang River always bear witness, As we sail together a hundred years.* After reading it, Wanqing burst out laughing. She tapped him and said, "You and your cheesy verses!" But she carefully tucked the poem into her sleeve pouch. **Scene Ten: Night Thoughts** A lone lamp casts my single shadow on the wall, Upon my pillow, thoughts of you never cease. Rain taps the window frame, startling me from dreams, Wind slips through bamboo shutters, stirring quiet delight. I wish to be a bluebird bearing letters home, Not the lonely stars parted by jade barriers. When dawn comes, let us walk arm in arm, And brew fragrant tea to share in gentle joy. That night, Wanqing was alone at home. Thinking of the day's events, she tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Hearing rain beat against the plantain leaves outside, she donned a robe and sat up, writing a "Song of the Water Clock." *Lamplight sways, Curtain and screen still, On the pillow, endless longing. Wind steals by, Rain softly taps, My soul seeks a distant path in dreams. Thoughts are keen, Feelings burn, I wish to turn into a pair of butterflies. By dawn we dance together, By dusk we rest together, By Lujiang we ever stay side by side.* After writing, she folded it into a paper crane, hoping it would carry her thoughts to him. **Scene Eleven: The Vow** The bells of Deer Island shatter the dawn sky, Together they ascend the ancient peak's height. Hand in hand with the green cypress, their love like the tree, Hearts reflect the blue lotus, their will like the flower. They wish to become an eternal pair of phoenixes, Not a lonely fate for half a lifetime. Through wind and rain, they'll sail thousands of miles, Vowing to write their love on a long scroll. Later, they agreed to meet at the top of Sunlight Rock. In the morning breeze, Su Yu took Wanqing's hand and said, "Today, right here, I vow before heaven and earth: I wish to stay with you for life, sharing wind and rain." Wanqing's eyes glistened with tears. "I too wish to follow you, year after year." Su Yu gave her a jade ring; Wanqing returned a brocade pouch filled with red beans. Suddenly inspired, he wrote a poem: *A new vow engraved on a stone firm as a rock, A thousand threads of love tie both hearts in joy. A jade mirror reflects the vow for three lives, Red beans deep within hold the promise's crimson truth. Let the universe expand together, On the road we'll share peace and safety. The Lujiang spring waters flow long as ever— I will not fail you, nor fail heaven.* From then on, the lovers continued their story amidst the mortal flames of Deer Island, weaving ever-lasting affection. And there—their tale lingers, to be continued.
