When Memory Shortcuts Meet Transformer: A Deep Interpretation and Cognitive Correction of the N-Gram Paper. Amid the rapid advancement of large model technology, "computation-search separation" has long become a high-frequency buzzword in media interpretations of new architectures. Once Liang Wenfeng's team's N-Gram paper was published, many bloggers labeled it as stripping away static knowledge and overturning Transformer's storage logic. But when we clear the fog of technology dissemination and approach from the underlying mechanisms and engineering implementation, we discover a subversive cognitive truth. N-Gram does not strip knowledge from the Transformer; instead, it creates a precise semantic shortcut for its inefficient computational analogy queries. It does not change the core logic of large models relying on computation for knowledge access, but it opens a gap toward a more efficient architecture in the balance of efficiency and performance. To grasp the essence of this paper, one must first thoroughly understand the deeper meanings of two core terms: N-gram and conditional memory. The former originates from Greek. It roughly means "scratch" or "trace." This is originally a neuroscience concept, which can be understood as an engram—the physical trace of memory stored in the brain. It is not a complete replay of events, but a memory clue that condenses core features. The latter literally translates to "conditional memory," which implies hidden meaning on the surface. The same memory clue can trigger completely different information under different conditions. These two names are not arbitrary technical codes; they are Liang Wenfeng's team's profound annotation of the essence of model memory, and also the key to cracking cognitive misunderstandings. I. Misreading by Public Opinion: Oversimplified Computation-Search Separation and Technical People's Cognitive Bias. In the media's interpretation context, The core value of N-Gram is summarized as stripping the near-factual knowledge from the FFN and storing it in an independent conditional memory module, achieving true computation-search separation. This narrative caters to the public's expectation of cost reduction and efficiency improvement—after all, who wouldn't want large models to reduce parameter size and lower memory consumption? As a technical person deeply rooted in traditional algorithms, I initially fell into this cognitive trap. In my imagination, N-Gram's conditional memory should be an independent knowledge warehouse. The FFN would no longer store static facts like "Alexander was born in Macedonia" or "Diana was the Princess of Wales," instead focusing on logical reasoning and contextual adaptation. When the model needs such knowledge, it can directly retrieve complete information from the conditional memory, like querying a database. This interpretation seems perfect on the surface, but it cannot withstand scrutiny from the first principles of information theory. Can a semantic vector really carry massive details like the life story of a historical figure or the functions of an international organization? Here, a general guideline for large model design must be clarified. To achieve efficient alignment of semantic features, the word embedding dimension and hidden layer dimension of a model are usually set to a unified value. 2048 dimensions is a common choice in both industry and academia. The N-Gram feature vector used for retrieval in N-Gram and the prompt vector stored in Conditional Memory must have the same dimension as the model's main architecture; otherwise, dimension mismatch would cause semantic mapping failure. This is the underlying logic of Transformer architecture design. Based on this consensus, we can confidently proceed with subsequent analysis. Even if the dimension is 1024 or 4096, the core conclusion remains unchanged. No fixed-dimensional dense vector can carry the complete knowledge details of a real-world entity. From the nature of information capacity, a 2048-dimensional vector, with each dimension stored as a 32-bit float, totals only about 8 KB. This 8 KB capacity cannot even store a hundred-word biography of Alexander in text form, let alone complete battle details, character relationships, etc. If conditional memory truly achieved knowledge stripping, it should return multiple vectors, each corresponding to a knowledge detail, rather than a single 2048-dimensional vector. This key contradiction is precisely the entry point that clears the fog and touches the essence of N-Gram. In fact, most media interpretations of "computation-search separation" are typical shallow misreadings. They only see N-Gram's surface-level reduction in computation and increase in efficiency, but ignore the core logic of Transformer architecture: computation is storage, and storage is computation. Large model knowledge is never stored as data copies, but encoded in parameter weights within the FFN and attention layers. The process of accessing knowledge is essentially the computation process of parameter matrices. N-Gram's innovation does not overturn this logic; instead, it builds an efficient shortcut for knowledge awakening on top of this logic.
